Of Pearls and Pigs

Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. [Matthew 7:6 KJV]

What are the pearls?  Spiritual knowledge or material resources in the form of money, goods and services?  Both?

Who are the swine?  Be careful with your answer.  For who, from among us, was not wallowing in the mud before our Heavenly Father called for them to come out?

Alas, it would not fulfill His purposes to force anyone to be who they do not want to be.  Therefore, all who would have rather stayed in the slop will be allowed to return to it.  For it is written: These people are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them.  For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error.  They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”  If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.  It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.  Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.” [2 Peter 2:17-21 NIV]

Waiting For You To Fall

Waiting For The Sun
The Jayhawks
I was waitin’ for the Son
Then I walked on home alone
What I didn’t know
Was He was waitin’ for
You to fall

So I never made amends
For the sake of no one else
For the simple reason
That He was waitin’ for
You to fall

It was not lost on me

It was not lost on me

Walkin’ on down the road
Lookin’ for a friendly handout
Somethin’ might ease my soul

So I kept my spirits high
Entertaining passers-by
Wrapped in my confusion
While He was waitin’ for
You to fall

It was not lost on me

It was not lost on me

Walkin’ on down the road
Lookin’ for a friendly handout
Somethin’ might ease my soul

It was not lost on me

It was not lost on me

Walkin’ on down the road
Walkin’ on down the road
Walkin’ on down the road
Walkin’ on down the road

So Blue

Blue
The Jayhawks
Where have all my friends gone
They’ve all disappeared
Turned around maybe one day
You’re all that was there
Stood by on believing
Stood by on my own
Always thought I was someone
Turned out I was wrong

And you
Brought my through
And you
Made me feel
So blue
Why don’t you stay behind
So blue
Why don’t you stop
And look at what’s goin’ down

If I had an old woman
She’d never sell me a lie
It’s hard to sing with someone
Who won’t sing with you
Give all of my mercy
Give all of my heart
Never thought that I’d miss you
That I’d miss you so much

And you
Brought my through
And you
Made me feel
So blue
Why don’t you stay behind
So blue
Why don’t you stop
And look at what’s goin’ down

All my life
Staying while
I’m waiting for
Staying while
Someone I could
Waiting around
Show the door
Not that I’m blue
But nothing seems to change
That I’m blue from now on
You come back that month

So blue
Why don’t you stay behind
So blue
Why don’t you
Why don’t you stay behind
So blue
Why don’t you
Why don’t you stay behind
So blue
Why don’t you stop
And look at what’s goin’ down

Not Seeing So Well

Stumbling Through The Dark
The Jayhawks
You're so in love
Little girl
So much in love
Little girl
Runnin' around in circles
Why
You know it's a crime
No less
No more
Than a rose
No less
No more
Than a rose
Try to attach a meanin’
To words that you've heard

Stumblin’ through the dark
Seems I'm stumblin’ through the dark
Everybody's stumblin’ through the dark

The men who proceeded us here
Left only questions and fears
The vanity formed by beauty lies
You know it's a crime

Stumblin’ through the dark
Seems I'm stumblin’ through the dark
Everybody's stumblin’ through the dark

Stumblin’ through the dark
Seems I'm stumblin’ through the dark
Everybody's stumblin’ through the dark

No Joke

An old joke has flood waters creeping closer to where a man sits on the roof of his house.  In a loud voice, he prays, “Lord, please come to my rescue in my hour of great need!”  A few minutes later, a neighbor paddles his canoe up next to the man and invites him to come join him in the canoe.  “No,” the man answers, I have prayed to the Lord, and I must remain where I am until He sees fit to deliver me out of this peril.”  As the neighbor was paddling away while shaking his head in disbelief over the man’s refusal to be rescued by him, he noticed that the flood waters were now almost up the man’s waist as he clung to the chimney sticking out of the roof of his house.  In an even louder voice, the man prayed again, “Lord, please come to my rescue in my hour of great need!!”  A few minutes later, a large rubber raft, with several members of the Navy onboard, floated right up next to him, and a Naval officer told him to reach out his hand in order to make it easier to be brought into the raft.  Again, the man answered the call for him to accept help, “No, I have prayed to the Lord, and I must remain where I am until He sees fit to deliver me out of this peril.”  The Naval personnel all had looks of great shock on their faces as they speed off to go help someone else, and after they had went a fair piece away, one of them told the commanding officer that he had seen through a pair of binoculars that the man was now hanging from the top of his chimney, with his head barely above the water line.  In a voice that now sounded more like a scream than a prayer, the man cried out, “Lord, please come to my rescue in my hour of great need!!!”  A few minutes later, a Coast Guard helicopter eased over his position, and a rescue diver dove into the water to help him get into the basket that was being lowered from the helicopter.  Again, the man answered the call for him to accept help, “No, I have prayed to the Lord, and I must remain where I am until He sees fit to deliver me out of this peril.”  The helicopter was not quite out of sight before the flood waters rose above his head, and the man drowned.  When the man stood before the Lord on Judgment Day, he asked Him, “Why did you not come to my rescue?”  With great sadness in His voice, the Lord answered him, “My son, I sent two different types of watercraft and a helicopter, but refused to see my hand at work.”

The absolute truth of the matter truly is that far too many in the Christian community fail to see our Heavenly Father’s hand at work because of the situation at hand not fitting in with their beliefs.  Alas, who can truly see without looking at things through His eyes, but who is so blind as the one who refuses to see?

How Do You Do?

A Boy Named Sue
Johnny Cash
Well
My daddy left home
When I was three
And he didn't leave much
To ma and me
Just this old guitar
And an empty bottle of booze
Now I don't blame him
‘Cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing
That he ever did
Was before he left
He went and named me Sue

Well
He must of thought
That it was quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs
From a lot of folks
It seems I had to fight
My whole life through
Some gal would giggle
And I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh
And I'd bust his head
I tell ya
Life ain't easy for a boy named Sue

Well
I grew up quick
And I grew up mean
My fists got hard
And my wits got keen
I'd roam from town to town
To hide my shame
But I made me a vow
To the moon and stars
That I'd search the honky-tonks
And bars
And kill that man
Who gave me that awful name

Well
It was Gatlinburg
In mid-July
And I just hit town
And my throat was dry
I thought I'd stop
And have myself a brew
At an old saloon
On a street of mud
There at a table
Dealing stud
Sat the dirty mangy dog
That named me Sue

Well
I knew that snake
Was my own sweet dad
From a worn out picture
That my mother had
And I knew that scar on his cheek
And his evil eye
He was big and bent
And gray and old
And I looked at him
And my blood ran cold
And I said
My name is Sue
How do you do
Now you're gonna die

Well
I hit him hard
Right between the eyes
And he went down
But to my surprise
He come up with a knife
And cut off a piece of my ear
But I busted a chair
Right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall
And into the street
Kickin’ and a gougin’
In the mud
And the blood
And the beer

I tell ya
I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when
He kicked like a mule
And he bit like a crocodile
I heard him laugh
And then I heard him cuss
He went for his gun
And I pulled mine first
He stood there lookin' at me
And I saw him smile

And he said
Son
This world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it
He's gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn't be there
To help you along
So I give you that name
And I said goodbye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's the name that helped to make you strong

He said
Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me
And you got the right
To kill me now
And I wouldn't blame you
If you do
But you ought to thank me
Before I die
For the gravel in your guts
And the spit in your eye
'Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch
That named you Sue

Yeah
What could I do
What could I do
I got all choked up
And I threw down my gun
And I called him my pa
And he called me his son
And I came away with a different
Point of view
And I think about him
Now and then
Every time I try
And every time I win
And if I ever have a son
I think I'm gonna name him
Bill
Or George
Anything but Sue
I still hate that name
