Nuked?

Before we get started, please understand that my heart goes out to the Japanese people.  For if the damage from the 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami was not enough, the possibility of a catastrophic nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant takes the full gravity of the dire circumstances that they are now facing way over the top.

Nonetheless, it is becoming quite clear that this time they got nuked by their own government.  For not nearly enough safety precautions were taken on a number of different levels.

It would seem that the Japanese government has also nuked us.  Well, at least in regards to the future construction of more nuclear power plants here.  For the calls for a moratorium on the building of any new facilities are ringing louder than ever, and Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) has introduced a [bill in Congress] that would even go as far as to halt the renewing of current licenses to operate a nuclear power plant, which would effectively shut-down all of the ones we already have in due time.

Alas, with all of the concerns over global-warming, nuclear power could be the answer to much of our problems.  For it truly is a very “green” source of power.

Of course, there is the problem with lethal doses of radiation to contend with, and in all fairness, the United States government has repeatedly proven to be no more trustworthy in matters of regulatory oversight than the Japanese when kick-backs and substantial campaign contributions are being offered.

I must admit that I am torn in both directions.  For I look upon the dangers of a nuclear meltdown as being like the danger that is faced when flying in a commercial airliner.  For statistics show that it is by far the safety way to travel—especially in comparison to being in an automobile, but all it takes is for one big plane to go down to have hundreds of casualties…
